Ten reasons why a website gets visitors but no enquiries, or no visitors at all, and what to change first.
Christoph SpeiserProject lead & salesShort answer: a website that brings no enquiries almost always has one of two problems. Either too few of the right people arrive (traffic) or those who arrive do not get in touch (conversion). The ten reasons below cover both. Check your visitor numbers first, then work through the list from the top.
Many owners assume they need a new design when enquiries stay away. Sometimes that is true, but often the cause is more specific: an unclear promise, a hidden phone number, a page that takes too long to load on a phone. A targeted fix is cheaper than a rebuild. If a rebuild is the answer, we cover it in website relaunch without losing SEO.
| Symptom | Likely problem | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Few visitors | Traffic: not found or not shown | Search visibility, Google profile, ads |
| Many visitors, few enquiries | Conversion: page does not convince or guide | Offer, call to action, trust, speed |
| Enquiries, but wrong ones | Targeting: wrong promise or keywords | Page copy, search terms, pricing signals |
Your pages do not target the terms customers search for, or the site is hard for search engines to read. Fix: one clear topic per page, titles and headings with the term customers use, and a technical base that loads fast. Our SEO and website check shows the main gaps.
For local services, the Google Business Profile often brings more contacts than the website itself. Fix: claim, verify and complete it, see optimising your Google Business Profile.
More questions are answered in ChatGPT or Google’s AI features. Pages that are unclear or only render with JavaScript are skipped. Fix: clear text, structured data and facts, see get cited by ChatGPT.
Traffic from broad terms or poorly targeted ads rarely turns into enquiries. Fix: aim at searches with intent, such as a service plus a place, and state clearly who you work for.
If a visitor cannot tell in five seconds what you do, for whom and why you, they leave. Fix: one sentence above the fold that names the service, the audience and the benefit.
A contact link in the footer is not a call to action. Fix: one primary action per page (call, form, booking), visible without scrolling and repeated after each key section, with your phone number tappable on mobile.
Most visitors arrive on mobile. Heavy images, too many scripts and layouts that shift while loading cost enquiries. Fix: compress images, remove unused scripts and test on a real phone. Why platform choice matters here: WordPress, Webflow or Next.js.
No named people, no references, no reviews, no address: visitors hesitate. Fix: real customer quotes with permission, project examples (see our projects), certifications, a complete imprint and a visible team.
Long forms, mandatory fields nobody needs, a form that errors or sends no confirmation. Fix: ask for the minimum (name, contact, message), test the form yourself every month and confirm receipt.
Without tracking you cannot see where visitors drop off, and without a fast reply enquiries go to a competitor. Fix: track form sends and calls as goals, and reply the same day.
Send us your address. We check it and tell you in a free 30-minute call what to fix first and whether a rebuild is worth it.
Usually the offer is unclear, there is no visible next step, the page is slow on phones or trust signals are missing. Start with the headline and the main call to action.
It depends on how you are found. Ads and your Google profile can work within weeks, search rankings usually need months. There is no reliable fixed number.
Often targeted changes are enough. A rebuild pays off when the structure, speed or technology limit what you can fix.
Sometimes, but structure and content matter more than looks. A clear offer and a visible next step beat a pretty page without them.
