Since late August 2026 Austrian businesses can advertise inside ChatGPT. Here is what is actually live, what is still missing in the EU, and how to decide whether a test is worth it.
Christoph SpeiserProject lead & salesShort answer: ChatGPT ads have been running in Austria since 24 August 2026, and since 31 August any eligible business can book them through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer for Free and Go users, are matched to the current conversation rather than to a personal profile, and there is no minimum spend. Health, finance and legal services are excluded in Europe for now.
For the first time since Google Ads in 2002 and Facebook ads around 2012, a channel with hundreds of millions of users is opening to advertisers in Austria, and it is opening at a moment when people are not scrolling but asking: “Which bike shop in Graz services e-bikes?”, “What’s a good gift for a coffee lover under €80?”. That is the moment just before a decision.
We run Google and Meta campaigns for Austrian businesses and have managed over €2 million in ad budget, so we look at ChatGPT ads the way we look at any new channel: what exactly can you book, who sees it, what does a click cost and how do you measure whether it paid off. This article sorts the facts from the hype as of October 2026.
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows inside ChatGPT conversations. When someone asks a question with a commercial angle, a relevant ad can appear below the end of the answer, in a visually separate box marked as sponsored. The answer itself stays untouched: OpenAI calls this principle “answer independence”, meaning advertisers cannot buy their way into what ChatGPT recommends.
That distinction matters. Being recommended by ChatGPT in its answer is organic visibility, which you earn through content, reviews and machine-readable data. That is what GEO is about, and we explain it in detail in how to get cited by ChatGPT. Being advertised below the answer is paid visibility. Both sit on the same screen, and the strongest position is to have both.
An ad consists of the advertiser name, a favicon, a short title, one or two lines of copy, an image and a link to your landing page. OpenAI has also started showing two ads from different advertisers in the same footer, so the space is not always exclusive.
OpenAI tested ads in the US from February 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager there in May and announced the European expansion on 19 August 2026. Austria is one of 31 European markets: all 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 9 Feb 2026 | First ads shown in ChatGPT in the US (managed pilot, high minimum budgets) |
| 5 May 2026 | US self-serve Ads Manager opens in beta, the minimum spend is dropped |
| 19 Aug 2026 | OpenAI announces ChatGPT Ads for 31 European markets including Austria |
| 24 Aug 2026 | Ads start showing to users in Austria and the rest of Europe |
| 31 Aug 2026 | Self-serve Ads Manager (beta) opens to eligible European advertisers |
| Sep 2026 | Further expansion, more than 60 markets in total |
In practice this means: you can create an account at ads.openai.com today, or go through an agency partner. Beta is the honest word here. Features change monthly, reporting is simpler than in Google Ads and some options available in the US are not yet switched on in Europe.
Not every ChatGPT user is reachable. Ads are shown only on the Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu see no ads at all. Accounts that are flagged or predicted as under 18 get no ads either.
OpenAI also keeps ads out of sensitive conversations: personal health, mental health and political topics are excluded as placements. If someone describes symptoms, no ad will appear, whatever you bid.
For your planning this means the reachable audience is large but skewed towards private users on the free plan. B2B decision-makers who use ChatGPT through a company Business or Enterprise licence are not reachable via ads, which is one more reason to work on organic visibility in parallel.
This is where Europe differs most from the US. In the EEA and Switzerland, personalised ads are not available at launch. Ads are matched to the context of the current conversation plus coarse signals such as language and approximate location. ChatGPT’s memory or your past chats are not used to target ads in Europe.
Targeting therefore works through context, not keywords. You describe your offer, OpenAI derives context hints from your ad, your landing page and the conversation, and decides in an auction whether your ad fits. Your landing page text is part of the targeting, so a vague page means vague placements.
We set up tracking consent-compliant from day one, ideally server-side, as we do for Google and Meta in our performance marketing. Without clean measurement you will only see clicks, not what an enquiry or sale actually cost.
OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted auction. You pay either per click (CPC) or per thousand impressions (CPM); conversion-based bidding has been added since. There is no minimum spend in Ads Manager. OpenAI has not published official average click prices for Austria, and early figures from the US say little about a market where competition is only just starting.
What we can tell you is our own pricing for a structured test. These figures come straight from our ChatGPT ads pilot:
| Item | Per month | Three-month pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Management by 404media (setup, tracking, campaigns, weekly optimisation, reporting) | €650 | €1,950 |
| Media budget, billed directly by OpenAI, no markup | from €465 (at least €15/day) | from approx. €1,395 |
| All-in | from €1,115 | from approx. €3,345 |
Why three months? Because the first weeks are for learning: which contexts trigger your ad, which copy gets clicked and which landing page converts. After three months you decide with real numbers, not with a contract hanging over you.
ChatGPT ads will not replace Google Ads for most Austrian businesses in 2026. They are an additional channel at an earlier point in the decision. The table shows the differences that matter for budget decisions:
| Google Ads | ChatGPT ads (EU, Oct 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Keywords someone types | Context of a conversation |
| Placement | Above and below search results, Maps, YouTube, Display | Below ChatGPT’s answer |
| Personalisation | Audiences, remarketing, customer lists | Not available in the EEA at launch |
| Competition | Mature, high click prices in many sectors | New, few advertisers so far |
| Categories | Health, finance and legal allowed with certification | Health, finance and legal excluded outside the US |
| Reporting | Very detailed, years of tooling | Aggregated, beta |
| Best use | Capture existing demand | Be present while people research and compare |
Our view from practice: if your Google Ads are not yet profitable, fix those first. If they work and you want to grow beyond them, ChatGPT is the most interesting test channel at the moment because you are early. With Aumaerk, for example, the combination of a redesigned shop with Google and social ads drove the best result in our portfolio, +219 % (case study). ChatGPT ads are built on the same logic: a good landing page plus traffic with clear intent.
OpenAI’s ad policies currently allow a limited set of categories in Europe: consumer goods and household products, local services, travel and entertainment, digital products and education. Shops, restaurants, hotels, trades, course providers and software companies fit well.
Excluded outside the US are health services (practices, clinics, therapists), financial services (credit, insurance, investment) and legal services. If you run a practice, ChatGPT ads are simply not an option in Austria today. Your levers are a strong website, a clean Google Business Profile and organic visibility in AI answers. We describe what that looks like in our article on websites for doctors.
Every ad and landing page also goes through an automated review. The landing page must be crawlable, load reliably and match what the ad promises.
We tell clients openly when a channel does not fit. ChatGPT ads are the wrong place for your money if:
Whether you start next month or in spring, these five steps pay off either way, because most of them improve your Google Ads and your organic visibility too:
If you want help, we take three companies at a time into our ChatGPT ads pilot: account setup, tracking, up to three campaigns, weekly optimisation and a report you understand without translation.
We look at your offer, your website and your current ads and tell you honestly whether a test makes sense, and with what budget. Book a free strategy call, and if it fits you get a fixed quote.
Yes. Since 24 August 2026 ChatGPT ads have been shown in Austria, and since 31 August eligible businesses can book them themselves via the Ads Manager beta at ads.openai.com or through an agency partner such as 404media.
OpenAI charges per click or per thousand impressions in an auction, with no minimum spend, and has not published average prices for Austria. Our three-month pilot costs €650 a month for management plus at least €15 a day media budget billed directly by OpenAI, so from about €1,115 a month all-in.
No. In the EEA and Switzerland personalised ads are not available at launch. Ads are matched to the current conversation plus language and approximate location, and advertisers only see aggregated figures, never individual chats.
Not in Austria at the moment. OpenAI’s ad policies exclude health, financial and legal services outside the US. For practices, a strong website, the Google Business Profile and GEO are the better levers right now.
No. Ads appear in a labelled box below the answer and do not influence the answer itself. To be named in the answer you need organic visibility, which is what GEO is about.
Almost never. Google Ads capture people who already know what they want; ChatGPT ads reach them earlier, while they are researching. Treat ChatGPT as an additional test budget, not a replacement.
