WordPress, Webflow or Next.js: which to choose for the AI future

Key takeaways

  • Our verdict is clear: for a company website that should still work in five years, build on Next.js.
  • AI systems and Google read server-rendered text, structured data and clean markup; Next.js makes these the default instead of an add-on.
  • With Next.js you can build AI features and agents into the site itself, and there is no plugin layer to maintain.
  • WordPress and Webflow are fine for some cases, for example a quick blog or a marketing team that wants to build alone, but they are the weaker foundation.

Short answer: choose Next.js. It is the best foundation for a website in the AI age, because it delivers complete server-rendered text to Google and AI crawlers, builds structured data and an llms.txt into the site, lets you add AI features and agents directly, and leaves you with code you own and no plugin layer to maintain. WordPress and Webflow can work, but they are the weaker starting point.

We build on Next.js, so we have a bias, and we say so. But the verdict is not a matter of taste: it follows from what a website now has to do. It must be read by people, by Google and increasingly by AI systems that summarise, cite and recommend. The foundation decides how well that works. Below is a fair look at all three.

Simplified comparison. A carefully built WordPress or Webflow site can do many of these things, but with more effort.

Reason 1: what AI crawlers and Google actually see

Search is moving into answers. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features fetch pages, extract passages and cite sources. An analysis by Vercel and MERJ (December 2024) found that the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Claude do not execute JavaScript. If your content only appears after scripts run, they do not see it.

Next.js renders pages on the server, so the complete text is in the first response. WordPress and Webflow also serve HTML, so this is not a weakness of theirs. The point is that with Next.js it is guaranteed by the architecture, and you can combine it with fast loading and clean semantic structure without fighting a builder. Google itself says there is no special trick for AI features: pages must be indexed, eligible for a snippet and useful. Next.js makes those basics easy to get right. Reason 2: structured data and llms.txt as defaults

Organisation, service, FAQ and article schema help machines understand who you are and what you offer. In a Next.js site they are generated from the same content as the pages, together with sitemap, robots.txt and llms.txt. Every new page ships with them, and they never go stale. On WordPress you assemble the same result from plugins that must be configured, updated and kept from conflicting.

Reason 3: AI features and agents inside your site

The next step after being found is being useful: a chat advisor that answers questions from your own content, a form that qualifies enquiries, a search that understands intent, an agent that books or hands over to your team. With Next.js these are ordinary parts of the application, built against your data and your rules. On a builder platform you depend on what the platform exposes; on WordPress you depend on a plugin whose maintainer decides what is possible. This is the strongest argument for Next.js, and the one that will matter more every year.

Reason 4: no plugin layer, and code you own

WordPress itself is well maintained; the risk sits in the plugin ecosystem. In our guide from WordPress to Next.js we show the numbers from Patchstack. A Next.js site has no public admin login and no plugin layer, so the attack surface is much smaller. You still update dependencies, but there is nothing to patch every week.

Ownership matters too. Webflow’s code export gives you static HTML, CSS and JavaScript, but CMS content, e-commerce and forms do not come along, so leaving means rebuilding. With Next.js the code is yours and runs on any compatible host. Hosting in the EU stays a free choice.

When WordPress or Webflow still make sense

  • WordPress: a blog or content site run by an editorial team that already lives in WordPress, and a budget that rules out a rebuild.
  • Webflow: a marketing team that wants to design and publish alone, a campaign page or a short-lived project.
  • Both: a very small site where only a name and phone number must be findable.

For everything that should bring enquiries for years, we recommend Next.js. Editing is not a reason to hesitate: with 404media you edit texts and images yourself in our own editor with live preview. More on our Next.js agency page.

How to decide in three questions

  1. Should the site bring enquiries for the next five years, and be found by AI systems? Then Next.js.
  2. Do you want AI features, an advisor or custom logic on the site? Then Next.js.
  3. Is it a short-lived or tiny site? Then WordPress or Webflow are acceptable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Next.js better than WordPress?

For a company website that should win enquiries and be found by AI search for years, yes. It makes server-rendered text, structured data and AI features the default and has no plugin layer. WordPress is still fine for simple blogs.

Is Webflow good for SEO?

It can be, because it serves clean HTML. The limits are lock-in and the features the platform allows. Code export does not carry over CMS content, e-commerce or forms.

Can I edit a Next.js website myself?

Yes. With 404media you change texts and images in our own editor with live preview, without touching code.

Do AI crawlers read JavaScript websites?

According to a Vercel and MERJ analysis (December 2024), the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Claude do not execute JavaScript. Server-rendered pages avoid the problem.

Will I lose my rankings if I switch?

Not with a complete 301 redirect plan. See relaunch without losing SEO.
