Key takeaways

  • A professional online shop in Austria typically costs about €8,000 to €30,000 or more as a one-off build; the range depends on products, integrations and design.
  • Running costs (platform plan, payment fees, apps, maintenance) often decide the real price over three years.
  • Shopify is the right start for most small and mid-sized shops; a custom build pays off for complex products, B2B logic or unusual workflows.
  • Shops need extra legal basics: terms, withdrawal information, a correct order button and an imprint.

Short answer: an online shop in Austria typically costs about €8,000 to €30,000 or more as a one-off build, in line with the ranges in our website cost guide. On top come running costs for the platform, payment fees, apps and maintenance. The price depends far less on the number of products than on integrations, design depth and how your orders are processed.

A shop is more than a website with a cart. It has to take payments, calculate shipping and tax, talk to your stock or accounting software and meet stricter legal rules. That is why shops sit at the upper end of the price scale. These ranges are market values from publicly stated prices of Austrian providers, not a 404media price list.

What an online shop costs, by type

Type of shopTypical scopeMarket range (one-off, net)
Professional Shopify shopOwn design, product structure, SEO set-up, payment, shipping, legal pagesroughly €8,000 to €20,000
Large or complex shopMany variants, B2B prices, ERP or stock integration, several languagesroughly €15,000 to €30,000+
Custom shop or platformOwn back end, special checkout or booking logicfrom roughly €20,000
Market ranges from publicly stated prices of Austrian providers (2026). No 404media price list.

What drives the price

  • Product data: importing and cleaning hundreds of products takes real time, especially with variants.
  • Design: an adapted theme costs less than a design built around your brand and your customers.
  • Integrations: stock, accounting, ERP, marketplaces, newsletter, reviews.
  • Payment and shipping: local methods, several carriers, pick-up, B2B invoices.
  • Content: product texts, photos, category pages. Often the biggest hidden item.
  • Languages and markets: every language and country brings tax and legal work.

Running costs of an online shop

Budget the running costs from day one. They differ strongly between platforms, so ask for the numbers in writing rather than relying on a monthly teaser price.

Shopify or a custom shop?

For most small and mid-sized shops a hosted platform like Shopify is the better starting point: checkout, payments, tax and security are solved, and you pay for design and set-up instead of building a shop engine. A custom shop makes sense when your product logic is unusual, for example configurators, B2B price lists with complex rules, or bookings combined with products.

We build Shopify shops with our own design and set-up, and custom builds where the standard does not fit. If you already have a shop and it is slow or hard to change, a rebuild can be cheaper than patching it further.

Shops have additional duties on top of a normal website. In short:

  • A complete imprint, see imprint requirements.
  • Terms and conditions, withdrawal information and a clear price display including tax and shipping.
  • An order button that clearly states the obligation to pay.
  • A privacy policy and a cookie consent that actually blocks tracking until the visitor agrees, see the GDPR checklist.

This is general information, not legal advice. Have your terms checked by a lawyer or your chamber of commerce.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an online shop cost in Austria?

Typically about €8,000 to €30,000 or more as a one-off build for a professional shop. Complex shops with integrations go higher.

Is Shopify cheaper than a custom shop?

Usually yes at the start, because checkout, payments and security are included. A custom shop can pay off if your product logic is unusual.

What are the running costs of an online shop?

Platform plan, payment fees per transaction, paid apps, domain and maintenance. Ask for all of them in writing and compare over three years, not just the first month.

How long does it take to build an online shop?

Typically longer than a company website, because product data, payment and shipping need set-up and testing. See how long a website takes.

Is there funding for an online shop?

Sometimes, but most programmes require that the project has not started yet. See our page on funding before you sign anything.
