AI Overviews answer the question above the search results and cite a handful of pages. How Google picks them, what that does to clicks and what you can do to be among them.
Christoph SpeiserProject lead & salesShort answer: Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above the normal search results and link to the pages they draw on. To be cited, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet; Google requires nothing beyond that. In practice, the pages that get cited answer a specific sub-question clearly, state concrete facts and come from a site Google already trusts.
Business owners ask us about this in two ways: “Why does Google show a summary instead of my website?” and “How do I get into that box?”. This article answers both, with what Google officially says and what studies have measured.
An AI Overview is a short answer that Google’s Gemini models write for a search query. It sits above the list of results, shows links to the pages used and appears only when Google’s systems consider a summary especially helpful. In German-language search it is labelled “Übersicht mit KI”.
In Austria, Google started rolling out AI Overviews at the end of March 2025, together with Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. According to Google, AI Overviews had more than 2 billion monthly users worldwide by July 2025. Users cannot switch them off; the “Web” filter shows plain links without the summary.
AI Overviews are not the same as AI Mode. AI Mode is a separate tab where you can ask follow-up questions, like in a chat. How it works and what it means for businesses is covered in our article on Google AI Mode.
Google’s guide “AI features and your website” on Search Central describes three things:
Fan-out is why ranking alone is no longer the whole story. Ahrefs analysed around 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews for its March 2026 update: about 38 % of them were in the top 10 for the same search, around 31 % ranked between 11 and 100, and around 31 % were not in the top 100 at all. Pages that answer one precise sub-question have a chance even without a top position.
Where the pages cited in AI Overviews rank
Nobody can book a place in an AI Overview. But the pages that get cited share some traits. In our GEO checks for Austrian businesses, these steps make the difference:
Structured data helps Google understand a page, but Google says it is not a requirement for AI Overviews. How AI systems pick sources beyond Google is explained in How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google decide which businesses to recommend.
For informational searches, yes. The Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 Google searches by 900 adults in the US in spring 2025:
Searches with a click on a normal result
Links inside the summary itself were clicked on around 1 % of visits. Google disputes such studies. For a business, the consequence is still clear: for simple questions the visit no longer happens on your website, but the decision about which company is named happens in the summary. Searches with buying intent, such as “web design agency Vienna”, still lead to clicks and enquiries. How SEO and GEO differ is covered in SEO vs. GEO.
| What | Where | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search Console, AI report (worldwide since 31 August 2026) | No clicks, AI Overviews and AI Mode shown together |
| Total traffic from Google | Search Console, Performance report (Web) | AI clicks are included, not shown separately |
| Which competitors are cited | Manual tests: the same 10 customer questions every month | Answers vary by wording, place and time |
| Enquiries | Contact form and phone: ask “How did you find us?” | Only what customers tell you |
For a first test of ChatGPT and other AI assistants, use our free GEO check: it shows whether you are named and whom the AI recommends instead.

AI-generated summaries that Google shows above the normal search results for some queries. They link to the pages they draw on. In German-language search they are called “Übersicht mit KI”.
Google started the rollout in Austria at the end of March 2025, together with Germany, Switzerland and six other European countries.
Your page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Beyond that, pages that answer a precise question in the first sentences, state concrete facts and come from a trusted site are cited more often. A guarantee does not exist.
No. Google writes that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup are needed. Structured data can still help Google understand your page.
Yes, with the nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet controls. They also affect normal snippets, so think it through first. Google-Extended does not control Google Search.
No. The “Web” filter in Google Search shows plain links without the summary.
